A Rising ‘Posh-Poor Divide’: How Prosperity and Deprivation Are Found Side by Side in Across England.

Within a postwar estate known as ‘The Nunny’, residents live in properties only a few metres from their wealthier counterparts in the adjacent Scartho village. A 1.8-metre-high barricade physically divides the two areas in the town of Grimsby, sealing off paths and streets that once linked them.

“It’s the posh-poor divide,” remarked a resident, aged 37. “It’s been like this for as long as I’ve known. I doubt they’ll take it down because I don’t think they’ll want to associate with us.”

An Increasingly Common Pattern Across the Country

Data from official statistics reveals the extent of inequality often exists, at times over little more than a few metres of tarmac, a hedge row or a barrier. Decades of austerity and lack of funding have led to a situation where a majority of local authorities now have a locality classified as one of the poorest in the country.

This spread of poverty has led to a significant increase in the quantity of places where disadvantaged and well-off residents end up as immediate neighbours. In 2019, just 65 of the most deprived areas bordered one of the wealthiest. This number increased to 119 in the latest data.

A Barrier Which Does More Than Separate Space

At this Lincolnshire site, the divide is the most pronounced in the UK and starkly obvious. The wall is much more than a metaphorical division; it causes tangible problems for daily routines.

  • School runs that ought to take 15-20 minutes turn into an sixty-minute detour.
  • Access to important services like grocery stores, educational facilities and care homes is made more difficult.
  • The site often sees vandalism and loitering, with instances of rubbish being dumped over the wall and related issues.

“People strive to have a nice house and nice garden, and then you reside facing that,” said one local, gesturing towards the rusted barricade.

Local Bonds Against a Backdrop of Challenges

At a local community centre, workers emphasise that support transcends addresses. “Where you live doesn’t necessarily indicate your personal struggles,” explained director Tracey Good.

Regardless of ranking in the lowest 10% for multiple deprivation indicators, Nunsthorpe retains a fierce loyalty and sense of togetherness among its residents. Meanwhile, the neighbouring area is classified among the least deprived 10% nationally.

A Similar Story: An Estate in Kent

This pattern is mirrored nationally. The Stanhope area in Kent, a mid-century housing development, is in the most disadvantaged tenth of neighbourhoods in the country. It is immediately adjacent by spacious houses built in the 2000s that sit in the top 10% for job prospects and living environment.

“They might have bigger houses, but here there’s a stronger community,” commented a long-term resident, 63. “It’s likely a lot of people over there never even talk to each other.”

The financial gap is evident: an typical three-bedroom house sells for about £275,000 on the Stanhope estate, while across the divide equivalent homes go for about £410,000.

Residents speak of a tangible feeling of being overlooked. “Our neighbourhood is neglected,” stated resident Susan. “Over here our facilities have slowly been taken away, and the majority of the community problems here are related to financial hardship.”

The increase in these ‘inequality borders’ presents a picture of an increasingly segregated England, where prosperity and deprivation are often awkwardly close neighbours.
