Residents of the Big Apple will learn who will be their new city leader this election day, in a race that will decide who runs and protects the nation's largest city at a moment when the former president has threatened to send military troops to the urban center.

In this context, New York has witnessed a mayoral election that has matched two distinctly opposing Democrats against one another. The election has turned into an acrimonious face-off, laced with accusations of racism and anti-Muslim sentiment, but it is the ideological divide between the two main contenders that could have major implications for how the Democratic party fares in next year's congressional races.

The Rising Progressive

In the progressive corner is the democratic socialist, the 34-year-old democratic socialist whose rapid ascent and grassroots campaign has attracted global notice. On the establishment side is Andrew Cuomo, the ex- Democratic New York governor now running as an independent – and benefiting from the support of ultra-rich donors and corporations.

With days to go, it is Mamdani, the former longshot who beat Cuomo in the party primary who is solidly positioned as the leading candidate. The candidate, who has campaigned on a agenda of affordability and pledged to freeze rent for about two million New Yorkers, has outpaced Cuomo by double-digits across all surveys conducted in the fall, and it is very much the progressive's race to lose.

“We have to make clear that when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF,” Mamdani said in the recording, recorded at a DSA gathering in 2023. The progressive, a longtime critic of Israel who has said the country is engaging in atrocities in Gaza, indicated he was criticizing cooperative programs between the city police and IDF.

Emotional Response

As the race closes, the candidate appears to have won empathy and backing, however, for his reaction to his opponent's escalating attacks.
